Qasr Al Hosn: Preserving the History and Culture of Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is a sprawling metropolis filled with luxury residential homes, opulent mosques, high-end hotels, and shopping malls. Despite its modernity, the city has managed to preserve its history and culture in various ways, and one of the most prominent examples is Qasr Al Hosn.
Qasr Al Hosn is a simple stone structure that stands in stark contrast to the city’s modern buildings and monuments. It is also the oldest building in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and houses a watchtower, the first permanent structure in the area. Additionally, you’ll find two major buildings at Qasr Al Hosn: the Outer Palace and the Inner Fort. For many years, the ruling family called this place home. It was not only the ancestral home of the current ruler but also served as the seat of the government, a national archive, and a consultative council.
If you want to explore the history of Abu Dhabi, a visit to Qasr Al Hosn is a must. While the building’s architecture is unique to Abu Dhabi, it’s not the only reason to visit. After undergoing 11 years of conservation and restoration work, Qasr Al Hosn opened as a history museum in 2018.
The Qasr Al Museum is a history capsule that takes you on a journey through Abu Dhabi’s evolution from a simple fishing village in the 18th century to the global city it is today. The museum’s exhibits, including artifacts, manuscripts, and archival materials, date back to 6000 BC.
Make sure to add a visit to Qasr Al Hosn to your Abu Dhabi itinerary. Knowing the city’s past is just as important as enjoying its new and modern attractions.
